Nigeria and U.S Has Cordial Relationship in Policing-Dingyadi

The Honorable Minister of Police Affairs Alhaji Mohammad Maigari Dingyadi has said that Mr. Presidents number one agenda in this Next Level dispensation is to guarantee the security of lives and properties of the citizens of this great nation, Nigeria. This led to the re-establishment of the Ministry of Police Affairs.

In his speech during the courtesy call of the U.S Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E Beth Leonard to the Ministry on Tuesday, 10th March 2020, Dingyadi noted that great cordial relationship has existed between the U S and Nigeria especially in the area of policing.

Explaining one of the steps the Ministry is taking in making sure there is better policing, he said that the Police Trust Fund will aid in training of the men of the Police force maximally and ensuring their welfare. On the issue of community policing, Dinyadi noted that currently, Nigeria has about 350,000 (three hundred and fifty thousand police men which is not enough if we must think of appropriate policing, thus, the introduction of community policing.

The Minister said that adequate infrastructure needs to be put in place as more logistics and support is needed by the police.

Speaking earlier, the Ambassador of the U.S to Nigeria, H.E Beth Leonard said it has become pertinent that the US understands Nigeria’s priorities, challenges and issues because U.S and Nigeria have come a long way in policing.

Dr. Maurice Nnamdi Mbaeri, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Police Affairs in his closing remark highlighted the need for U S to co-operate with Nigeria in the area of insecurity, curbing corruption and growing the economy in order to reduce the unemployment rate which is the canker worm that has aggravated the insecurity faced today.

While thanking the envoy on finding time to embark on such important visit, Mbaeri seized the opportunity to implore the US to assist in combatting Corona virus, noting that two cases have been identified in Nigeria. “U.S is far more advanced than Nigeria and it is hoped that they assist in combating this global health threat called Corona virus”.

DINGYADI TASK STAFF ON SERVICE DELIVERY

The Honourable Minister of Police Affairs,  Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi has reaffirmed his readiness to ensure the entire staff of the Ministry of Police Affairs contributes their quota to the success of the Ministry and the nation at large through commitment, accountability and hard work, noting that effective service delivery is Key to national development. He made this known in Abuja during his familiarization meeting with the staff of the Ministry recently. Dingyadi stressed that staff welfare and training is central to his style of administration since it aids productivity, but warned   ineffective staff of the consequence they tend to face.

The Permanent Secretary, Dr. Maurice Nnamdi Mbaeri in his remarks, commended the entire staff of the Ministry for maintaining good conduct despite paucity of fund for appropriate take-off and assured them of a better working condition since year 2020 budget have been approved.  Mbaeri said that for the Ministry to record adequate success, the management and staff must be willing to collaborate and work in harmonious manner. He added that the Ministry will institute an Award System for staff who shows diligence and effectiveness in service. Responding to questions from staff of the ministry,  he assured them that approval has been giving for staff auditing throughout the 36 states to enable government reduce wastages and fraud.

Comrade Basset Edet , representing the Chairman  Joint Council Union of the Ministry while delivering his speech, implored the management to carry the staff along  so as to keep all abreast. He equally tasked the staff to show professionalism in their respective fields. Bassey emphasized on the need to carry out a complete audit of the staff while acknowledging the fact that the Ministry of Police Affairs has staff in all the 36 states of the federation.

You may recall that the Ministry of Police Affairs was merged with Interior  Ministry in 2015. Due to the uprising of insecurity in the country, Mr. President re-established her in August 2019.
The Ministry of Police Affairs is saddled with the responsibility of Supervision and formulation of policies that would ensure efficient, effective and technology driven policing of the country.

Police Academy Bill Set to be Harmonized

POLICE ACADEMY BILL SET TO BE HARMONIZED

In a bid to address contentious areas of the Police Academy (Establishment Bill e.t.c), 2018 for a more invigorated and professional policing in Nigeria, a committee saddled with this responsibility was inaugurated by the Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi.

Speaking at the inauguration which was held in Abuja, 12th February, 2020, the Hon. Minister ably represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Maurice Nnamdi Mbaeri, said the inauguration of the committee is as a result of the retreat organized by the Senate committee on Police affairs in collaboration with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre in Lagos where contentious issues of the Bill was analyzed.

Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi explained that the committee membership was carefully selected to reflect various stakeholders who were free to consult and engage others for all-inclusiveness. The terms of reference to the members of the committee are as follows;

  1. To carefully study the entire content of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment e.t.c) Bill 2018.
  2. Obtain, Collate and examine input from the various stakeholders regarding the Bill.
  3. Obtain views and inputs and compare and contrast situations and circumstances from similar security training institutions such as Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA), Police Staff College, Jos (PSC) Police Anti-Terrorism School, Tai, Rivers State e.t.c.
  4. Prepare and recommend a Harmonized Document out of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment e.t.c) Bill, 2018 for presentation to the Senate Committee on Police Affairs for further necessary action.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Haliru Dauda Jika who was at the inauguration challenged the committee to work expeditiously bearing in mind national interest at all times. He informed the committee that as soon as they submit their report, a public hearing will be organized in respect of the Bill.

The Chairman and Commissioner, Police Service Commission, Barr. Tommy Mom, in his remark, expressed gratitude while pledging to deliver the report at the stipulatedtime.

FG Committed to Quality Education Police Affairs Minister Tells Nances

The Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammad Dingyadi has assured youths, of Government commitment to quality education and security which will engender a peaceful environment particularly at the Colleges of Education. He made this statement while receiving the Executive members of the National Association of Nigerian Colleges of Education in his office on Monday, 7/10/19.

The Minister commended the zeal to learn and the peace in colleges of Education, due to the able leadership of the President. He said teacher education is significant because teachers produce all class of professions in the country.

While promising to honour their invitation on the forth coming seminar, he assured them he is still part of the Association even though he is called to serve as a Minister of the Federal Republic.

Speaking earlier, Comrade Mammud Abubakar, President of the Association along with his team congratulated the Honourable Minister of Police Affairs on his appointment.  He said the Association is happy that the Hon. Minister is at a vantage position in government to help students of Colleges of Education particularly in the area of security since he was once their Board Chairman.

While corroborating the fact that the Nigeria Colleges of Education is the most progressive of all institutions in the country, he informed the Minister that there are 157 Colleges of Education nationwide mainly in rural areas which require security going by the current security challenges in the country.

He concluded by wishing the inviting the Hon. Minister to speak at a seminar later in the year
